Mission: To ensure our most precious memories are accessible to the end of life; thus, if music be the food of love, play on...

The Longest Day

"Nothing is better than music. When it takes us out of time, it has done more for us than we have the right to hope for: It has broadened the limits of our sorrowful lives; it has lit up the sweetness of our hours of happiness by erasing the pettinesses that diminish us, bringing us back pure and new to what was, what will be, and what music has created for us."   -Nadia Boulanger

"How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all if these."    -G.W. Carver

What if your gifts helped someone remember who they were, who they are, or the people who mean the most to them in this world? What if you had the power to heal someone – if only for moments?

Over the last year my blog posts have remained focused on Alzheimer’s awareness, perspectives in music education, and the scientific link between the two areas of advocacy. All of these pieces now come together in one beautiful puzzle for The Longest Day, a day to honor all those afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease and their caregivers who give of their time 24/7 with a dedicated day of activities. On or around our summer solstice, many teams choose to exercise by hiking, running, swimming, or boating, while others choose to bake in honor of their lost loved ones favorite treats. No matter the activity, this very long day represents the heart of remembering those we have lost to this terrible disease, and it also lifts up those who remain – both patients and caregivers.

As musicians, please raise your voices in song or lift up your instruments to join the above mission every 3rd Saturday in April with your prepared solos and ensembles. [click link above] #musiciansforthemind

For non-musicians, please raise your golf club, grab your mixer, your tennis shoes, your bowling ball, invite your trivia team, grab the horseshoes or bean bags and join us for The Longest Day! For more information, please visit www.alz.org/tld to find or start a team.

Music is the food of love as a true gateway to lucidity; therefore, it is my plea, along with thousands of music educators across the world, that we continue traditions of music excellence in our schools and within our homes to ensure connections to our families, their thoughts, and their minds until the end of natural life.
